This is the question I hear the most. A loyal volunteer gets asked to take over the kids department when a leader steps down and they accept with excitement! They receive their laptop and all the passwords and the leadership turns them loose to go change the world! Then the reality sets in…
Where do I start? The previous leader didn’t leave any clue as to how they managed to hold it all together. Team members inevitably see a change in leadership as the perfect time to step down. The curriculum looks completely different when you open it on the computer (because the previous leader would meticulously rewrite the script to fit your needs every week). You don’t know where the supplies are and no one has given you a budget (if you have one). The list goes on and on. It all suddenly looks very overwhelming and your excitement begins to fade.
You contact your leadership and ask if there’s any training available, to which they respond “Yes! You can create a training for your team.” Insert face palm here!
The above scenario happens more often than many lead pastors imagine. They genuinely have no idea what it takes to lead a kids ministry. It is usually the largest ministry in the church, often with the smallest budget and support and it’s our job to respectfully educate them when necessary.
If this is the situation you find yourself in, just hang on. We’re going to get you the help you need, in small bite sized pieces, so you can continue to be the souse, parent and human being that God created you to be. You can spend hours on Google, looking for help and resources or you can hang out right here and let us do the searching for you.
Where Do I Start?
Step One: PRAY!
God has given you the opportunity to bless His most precious demographic… His children. You need to go to him first. Give Him the ministry, the team and the needs and trust Him to give you the answers. You’ll be surprised how much more calm and confident you can be if you start with this step.
So right now, go to your prayer closet. Take a notebook, pen, and your Bible. Turn on some worship music and lay it all down before Him. Don’t rush this step. Be still and listen. Write down what inspiration you receive. It may feel wonky and weird if you’re not used to doing this, but don’t give up. You’ll be amazed at the peace and confidence it brings.
I’m praying for you!
Now, let’s start changing the world!
